MEMBERS of Devizes Budo Club will be training through the night next week in a bid to raise money for a new centre.

Their current site in Dunkirk Hill is being redeveloped and they now need to find £300k for a new building on Windsor Drive.

The 24 hour endurance event overnight next Friday will jump start the fundraising campaign with the club hoping to raise several thousand pounds towards their goal.

Organiser Sian Revell, who is the club’s karate instructor, said: “I got the idea from other endurance events I have been part of in the past.

“Along with current members anyone can come along and try the martial arts, have some fun and help the club in the process.”

The challenge will start at around 7pm, with 200 members of the club, along with friends, family and others wanting to get involved, taking part in Aikido, judo and karate.

There will also be off mat stands including a treadmill, rowing machine and a stationary bike.

The long established club has been based behind the former Queen’s Head pub since 1965, but now the old pub is being turned back into homes and two new cottages are to be built at the front of the site.

The club is hoping to raise the money needed within the next two years.

It obtained planning permission in November for a new base to built in the car park of the town council allotment site on Windsor Drive, but needs £300k to build it.

Mrs Revell said: “We need to get to £50,000 before we can apply for grants and funding for the remaining amount.

“We currently have £24,000 raised over the past couple of years so we are half way there.”

The new building will allow the club to include everything it needs and have space for modern changing rooms, kitchen and meeting rooms as well as the main hall.

The club has also set up a just giving page, to donate go to
