Christmas has officially arrived in Corsham as families flocked to the town’s cobbled streets on Friday to watch the lights being turned on.

Thousands of people descended on the town to soak up the festive atmosphere, watch artificial snow fall, ride donkeys and see the town being lit up.

It was youngster Henry Bonser from Corsham Regis Primary School who had the honour of switching on the Christmas lights. He beat 400 entries and won the under sixs’ category in the design a Christmas card competition.

Rio Dunphy took first place in the seven-11 age category and they both joined the chairman of Corsham Town Council, Ruth Hopkinson, on stage in front of the town hall, cheered on by the crowd as the count-down began at 6pm.

Mrs Hopkinson said: “I think this year is the best so far. I’ve walked up and down the High Street and the place is buzzing. It’s totally community orientated - the whole event and evening is fantastic.”

Visitors got the opportunity to go on fairground rides and browse dozens of stalls showcasing all sorts of different crafts, confectionary, refreshments and Christmas gifts.

Entertainment was provided by Corsham Windband, the Corsham Panto Group and pupils from Heywood Prep School performed Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree and other festive hits. First Step Dance also danced to a pop melody that received a huge round of applause.

St Bartholomew’s Church was packed with people admiring the 29 Christmas trees that have been decorated as part of the Christmas Tree Festival, organised by Christine Reid.

Local groups have been hard at work creating their masterpieces based on the carol I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing by. Members of the public have until December 14 to go to the church and vote for their favourite tree.
