Concerns have been raised by Corsham Town Council about the future of Mansion House, as a decision is yet to be made three years after Wiltshire Council put it on the market.

The Grade II listed building in Pickwick Road was originally put up for sale in 2011 and received bids from developers Hadston Ltd, owners of Hartham Park, Bill Hall, owner of the Martingate Centre, and a mystery third party.

Since then a number of U-turns has led to offers being withdrawn.

Ruth Hopkinson, chairman of Corsham Town Council, has expressed fears over the timescale of the sale. She said: “While there is indecision, what is happening is that this Grade II listed building is continuing to fall into disrepair.

“The chance of it reaching an economic position for the good of the town is moving further and further away. It is not helping regeneration and generally it’s spoiling the look of the town.”

Mrs Hopkinson added: “Judging by the way Wiltshire Council has dealt with the disposal of the property for at least the last four to five years then I have absolutely no confidence in moving forward that we are going to reach a position where the building can be used for what the town needs.”

In a statement a Wiltshire Council spokesman said the cabinet was still considering whether to retain or sell Mansion House and library and was taking into account the “emerging strategic economic plan for the county led by the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership”.

He added: “In the meantime the council will continue to maintain the building, and staff will be visiting the site over the next few days to agree what repairs and maintenance work are needed ahead of the winter to protect the building.”
