FAIRYTALES and fables came to life in Christian Malford over the weekend, as residents displayed their handcrafted scarecrows for this year's trail.

Hundreds of people took part in the two-day event last weekend, tracking down scarecrows such as Jack and the Beanstalk, Aladdin, Hansel and Gretel and Pinocchio.

“It was a really successful day in the end despite worrying about weather overnight on Friday,” organiser Laura Sidhu said.

“This year we did once upon a time, fairy tales and fables, and we had about 40 scarecrows.

“People did quite well with the fairytales but not everyone knew the fables, so they proved to be the trickiest, although I'm still sorting through the trail cards so people must have done well.

“We are quite lucky in that we are one of the first trails in the area, so we have gained quite a following.

“It was really nice to see people hanging around in the village after doing the trail and enjoying the bouncy castle and refreshments we had laid on."

The winners of this years people's choice were the Thomas family, who won £50 for their the Elves and the Shoemaker scarecrow, The Sidhu family, who won £30 for their Jack and the Beanstalk scarecrow and the Iles family, who won £20 for their Three Little Pigs scarecrow.

The winner of the builders choice and the winner of the most correct answers are yet to be announced.

Organisers believe that the trail has also helped raise around £4,000 for Christian Malford Primary School and Acorns Pre-School.

"The full amount is yet to be determined, but we're definitely close to last year's total," Mrs Sidhu added. "I know Acorns want to develop their outdoor area for the children, so half of the money will go towards that."
