VOLUNTEERS are being urged to come forward and help reopen an all-inclusive young person’s club in Chippenham for those with and without disabilities.

The 16-30 Phab Club in the town closed due to a lack of volunteers in 2015, but efforts are now being made to try and restart the group and an open meeting will be held this Friday (February 17) from 7.30pm at the Kingsley Road Community Hall.

“All the other Phab groups are adult groups, this was one of the only young groups that was going so we didn’t want it to go,” said Michael Braund, secretary of the Wiltshire and Swindon Phab magazine and area committee.

“We’ve put a lot of work in to try and get it reformed and it would be open to people with disabilities and able-bodied young people.”

Phab, a nationally charity, was originally formed in 1957 as a way of allowing people with and without disabilities to come together on equal terms and take part in activities and sport.

Carla Marygold is one of the volunteers who has stepped forward to help restart the Chippenham group after trying to find somewhere for her 20-year-old daughter, Kathryn, who suffers from Worster-Drought syndrome, a rare form of cerebral palsy.

“She wants to be outside with young people like every young person,” said Mrs Marygold.

“Just because they have a disability doesn’t mean they don’t want to do things, they want to be treated like any young person.

“I thinks there’s a need for any social group for young people with disabilities.”
