THE older generation in Chippenham had the chance to get together and find out what’s available to them across the county as they get older.

Organised by Chippenham Older People’s Champions and Age UK, the Big Get Together was held at the Neeld on Friday (October 21).

The event is designed to let people aged 55 and over know what is available to them, including information about local cubs, events, activates and volunteering opportunities.

“This particular event is the first one of its kind in Chippenham,” said Susan Desrosiers, befriending and partnership worker with Age UK and one of the organisers of the event.

“We started doing them about a year ago and we’ve had one in Corsham last April and one in Malmesbury.

“We try to link up with other organisations all with the purpose of helping to alleviate loneliness in older people, it’s to showcase what’s going on in all the areas around Wiltshire.

“It was very good, there were probably about 100 people in the room at any one time and we had dozens of different stands.

“Getting people to these events and finding out what’s available to them is incredibly important.

“It’s really difficult to get people to take on board what’s happening under their noses.”
