LADIES from a knitting group in Chippenham have put their brains and needles together and come up with the name for a new residential care home which is due to be built in the town.

Waterford Place was named by the Knit and Knatter knitting group who live at Bowles Court, both of which are owned by McCarthy and Stone.

The group opted for Waterford Place as a tribute to the Waterford Cloth Mills, which was previously located on Westmead Lane in the Eighteenth Century.

The mill was one of the town’s largest employers for over 100 years until it was destroyed by a fire in 1815.

Carla Greggory, duty support manager at McCarthy and Stone’s nearby assisted living development, Bowles Court, said: “The ladies are delighted to have had their name chosen for our latest development in the town.

“Inspiration for the name came during the group’s weekly knitting group held in our homeowner’s lounge.

“We have a lovely community at Bowles Court and it’s fantastic to see our homeowners forming new friendships as well as playing an active role in the future of the town.

“In fact, for their next project, the group are knitting poppies to send to the British Legion for their annual poppy appeal.”

Once complete, the Waterford Place development will comprise of 18 one-bedroom, 19 two-bedroom, and two unique three-bedroom apartments, exclusively for those aged 60 and over.
