CHIPPENHAM has held its first Purple Flag conference allowing businesses and organisations in the town to find out how the prestigious award can help them.

The Purple Flag status recognises a town or city’s safety and vibrancy during its night time economy, with Chippenham becoming the first market town in Wiltshire to be presented with the award following an inspection on December 5 last year.

Partners including Wiltshire Police, Chippenham BID, Chamber of Commerce, Street Pastors, town council and Wiltshire Council were present at the conference which was held last Friday at the Neeld Community and Arts Centre. “Absolutely I’m delighted for Chippenham, it’s been well over two years' work to get this,” said Councillor Peter Hutton, Wiltshire Council portfolio holder for public protection.

“It’s about opportunity and partnership, the whole reason we have got the status is not because of one individual but because of a number of partners working together.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for Chippenham and the businesses. It’s down to the community of Chippenham to take this forward because we want it to be looked on as a thriving town.”

Those attending the conference, including Chippenham MP Michelle Donelan, witnessed a number of presentations including one by Simon Ford from Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, who were awarded the Purple Flag status in 2012.

“Chippenham is one of a unique few who have the award and you should be proud of that,” he said.

“It’s a hell of a thing to put together and all the hoops you have to jump through.”
