VILLAGERS in Sutton Benger were evacuated from their homes on Saturday afternoon after concerns were raised about potentially explosive materials in a garden shed.

Army explosive experts were called to remove the materials and a 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of making an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose.

The precautionary evacuation measure saw a 100m cordon placed around properties in Sutton Benger and residents relocated to a nearby car park.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to an address in Sutton Benger at lunchtime on Saturday after concerns about potentially explosive materials in a garden shed.

"As a precaution, a 100m cordon was placed around properties and residents were evacuated to a nearby car park.

“An Army explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team arrived late afternoon and removed the materials. The cordon was lifted around 6pm and residents were then allowed back into their homes."

The 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of making an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose and taken to Melksham police station where he was questioned before being released on police bail.
