FROM clogs to high heeled silver boots, wacky footwear was the key to walking a mile in the shoes of Wiltshire carers last weekend.

The Walk A Mile In My Shoes event in Chippenham on June 13 raised nearly £914 to help Carer Support Wiltshire give unpaid carers support and the chance for some time out.

More than 60 people registered for the event, which started in Market Place with a fun warm up led by Vicki Diwell, and finished in Monkton Park with fete games and live music from Modern Vintage and Bryan Folklaw.

Marshal Denise Cooper said: "The atmosphere was great. Some of the walkers had actually swapped their shoes."

Walker Dianne Davis, of Melksham, said: "We were quite surprised at how long a mile felt, but we enjoyed doing it in slippers."

Her six-year-old daughter Gracie-Lou Vince said: "I'm going to take my medal into school. My teacher will be so proud of me."

Mayor of Chippenham David Powell, who cut the ribbon to set off the walkers, said: "It was a very worthwhile event. I was so inspired by the cause that I decided to do the walk as well. I can't believe there are 48,000 people in Wiltshire providing unpaid care for a relative or friend. My wife is a carer for her father, who is 93 and still living in his own home."

Carer Support Wiltshire said it plans to organise a similar event next year and thanked its sponsors - Gazette & Herald, John Williams Heating Services, Goughs Solicitors and Wiltshire Electrics.
