THE family of Chippenham College student Alex Snook have spoken of their anguish as they appealed for more information into the moped crash in which he died.

The 20-year-old known as a ‘big friendly giant’ was killed only two weeks after his step-dad, Nick Laird, died from a heart attack.

The crash happened on March 21 as Mr Snook rode to deliver shopping to his mum, Lynne Laird, who he cared for at her home in Mere.

His Yamaha 125cc moped collided with a Transit van travelling in the opposite direction on the A350 at Longbridge Deverill at around 4.15pm. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Snook's family are now appealing for the driver of a blue Honda Accord Estate, which was involved in the collision and was caught on CCTV revisiting the scene of the crash, to come forward.

Mr Snook’s auntie, Caryn Runciman, said: “As a family we just want closure to it and we just want to know what happened as it’s ripped this family apart and to the driver of the car, we just want them to come forward so that we can move on from this nightmare.

“When I found out on Saturday evening I couldn’t speak, I had to put the phone down and eventually I was the one who had to tell his dad, which is probably one of the hardest things I’ve had to do.

“It was even more difficult for the family as exactly two weeks before Alex’s step-dad died from a heart attack so his mum has had this double-tragedy and she lost both the people who cared for her. It’s just devastating.

“His funeral was on the Thursday and we had to go past the exact spot where Alex died and his mum still can’t look at the spot when she goes past.”

Mr Snook had been studying IT at Chippenham College and was in his final year of a three-year course while also working at Morrisons in Warminster and living near his mum in Mere.

Ms Runciman added: “He’d been working at Morrisons for six months and was just coming out of his shell and mixing with people as he was very shy but always polite and happy to help people.

“He was a big guy, but he was a big gentle giant.

“He liked anything to do with computers, he was studying IT at Chippenham College, and had a love for Mustangs, his dream was to own one at some point in the future.

“He would have been celebrating his 21st birthday this Tuesday but instead we’re picking out a headstone for him and it’s just horrible.”

Police have released an e-fit of the driver they are searching for regarding the incident and head of collision investigation Inspector Kevin Roseblade, has asked him to get in touch.

He said: “It is still not too late for this person to come forward and this is the chance for them to contact the police.

“My message to the public is that someone knows who this person is and although they might think it might be a small bit of information they have, it could be crucial to helping us.”
