WILTSHIRE Police arrested four men in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, September 26), after reports of a burglary at a Calne newsagent.

Police arrived at the newsagent next to Lloyds bank on the High Street within minutes and received another report that a vehicle was leaving the car park at the back of the Pippin at speed.

The vehicle was then spotted heading along Curzon Street, towards Studley Crossroads and past Derry Hill, in the direction of Chippenham.

A number of items were seen to be thrown from the vehicle into the road.

The vehicle was stopped in Stanley Lane, and four males, aged 18-24 from the Andover area, were arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of cannabis.

All four are currently in Melksham custody.

North Wiltshire Community Policing Team Inspector Mark Luffman said: “This is an excellent example of officers being on scene within minutes and working together to locate the individuals suspected of being responsible for the burglary.

“Our enquiries will continue in to the burglary to establish what, if anything, was stolen and we’d be keen to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard any suspicious behaviour in the High Street in Calne in the early hours of this morning.

“Finally, I’d like to thank the vigilant member of the public who alerted us to the incident when banging was heard coming from the newsagents – reporting incidents in progress is crucial so we can respond immediately.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
