DRIVERS who park their car on the private stretch of land previously used for Calne market could risk having their cars towed away or clamped according to Wiltshire Council.

The council were forced to reinstate the bollards around the land near the Sainsbury's overflow car park on The Pippin at the end of March after dozens of cars misused the space as a free all-day car park.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “This land is owned by us but is not and never has been a designated public car park. The site was used for the market held in Calne every week and also for community events. The market has for some time now re-located itself to Phelps Parade, and any requests to use the site for any purpose should be submitted to the council.

“Over recent months, the site has been misused for all day parking. We have now reinstated the bollards, that were previously removed by an unknown person not working for Wiltshire Council, and will manage the site. Other public car parks are available in Calne, providing alternate provision for the shoppers and residents of the town.”

No decisions on what the land will eventually be used for have been made.
