SPEED campaigner Sharon Burton is convinced the fact that one person has died and over 30 have been hurt in crashes on the A3102 through her village in five years means a safety review of the road is long overdue.

Figures released to the Gazette & Herald by Wiltshire Police after a Freedom of Information request this week reveal there have been 22 accidents since 2011, causing 32 casualties, one of which was fatal and another two deemed to have caused serious injury.

Mrs Burton, who is chairman of the Mile Elm Speed Stoppers group, believes the figures show a major rethink of the road should have been undertaken much sooner. Wiltshire Council is currently undertaking a review of road safety on the stretch of road.

“The road is scarring people’s lives,” said Mrs Burton. “A lot of people who are driving on that road are terrified.

“I have seen three head-on collisions since I have been here when someone loses control coming round the bend and hits another car.

“It is innocent people who are suffering as a result of this road.”

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said “We take road safety seriously and we will be reviewing this road and determining if further measures need to be taken.

“Previous measures have included new signs and road markings.

“We are also awaiting the details on the nature of the recent collision from the police and this will help us consider any further actions which may be necessary.”
