A DISABLED woman from Calne says she was barred from coming through the main entrance of her social club in her wheel chair as the owners wanted to keep the hallway clean.

Mary Gray, of Wansdyke Drive, has been attending Bremhill View Social Club for 30 years as part of the Calne Handicapped Club but was told she would now have to use the back door to protect the entrance hall carpet.

The 77-year-old has been in a wheel chair since a serious car accident back in 1976 and feels insulted by the club, who she believes are discriminating against her disability.

Mrs Gray said: “Last week I was refused point blank entrance into the club and was told that I would have to go through the back way.

“I feel rejected that I am not able to enter a public building through the main entrance. The reason they have done this has changed. They have moved the goal posts. They first said that it was because they wanted to protect the carpets and now they are saying that it is a health and safety concern.”

Mrs Gray was sent a letter from the social club in April in which they stated that she had been offered an alternative entrance to come into the building.

It was then pointed out that the committee of the club were investigating ways to protect the entrance hall carpet to enable this to be used rather than the alternative entrance.

Mrs Gray added: “I have been going in there for years and years. It does not make any sense as there is a ramp for wheel chair users and bays for blue badge holders just outside.

“If you park up you have to go all around the back and my objection is that I am being insulted that I am not allowed in the building like a normal person.

“I feel that I cannot enter that building in the proper manner. I am not prepared to do it. It is an insult.

“Many club members agree with me that I should be allowed to enter in the front, it is not fair that I cannot. I want to go through the front door.”

When asked Bremhill View Social Club said they would prefer not to comment about the incident.
