TWO CADETS from Calne have received the Royal British Legion award for their professionalism.

Cadet Sergeant Lauren Cuggy, 16, and Cadet Corporal Lauren Kayll, 13, were presented the Youth County Standard Bearers trophy, awarded by members of the Women’s Section of the Royal British Legion.

They received the award after competing in the Wiltshire County Standard Bearers competition which was held in Salisbury in September last year.

The competition involved an inspection where they were judged on the standard of their uniform, bearing and care of the standard. This was followed by a sequence of drill movements where they were judged on their individual drill.

Cadet Sergeant Cuggy said: “It was my first time taking part in the competition, I was very nervous beforehand and while I was competing. Overall I really enjoyed it."

Following the awards the two cadets are continuing their training sessions for standard bearing in Corsham and hope to attend the next competition in September.

The award shortly follows Cdt Kayll’s promotion to Cadet Corporal after she completed a cadet development course.

The John Bentley School pupil demonstrated her drive and determination by completing a Youth First Aid training course and air experience flying.

Emma Kayll, Lauren’s mum, said: “She is over the moon, she hasn’t been at the cadets for a full year yet, she just loves it and dedicates a lot of time to it. I used to be in the air force and my husband still is, so I think she wants to grow up to do that.”

Members of the cadets have been quick to congratulate Laura on her recent accomplishments and her dedication to the cadet group.

Commanding Officer Squadron Leader Mike Webster said “On behalf of the staff and cadets of 2189 Calne Sqn, I would like to congratulate Cadet Lauren Kayll on her promotion to the rank of cadet Corporal. She can be depended upon to support all the activities undertaken by the cadets”.
