PUPILS at Springfields Academy in Calne took part in a variety of activities to celebrate Literacy Day and the benefits that a lifetime of reading can bring.

Last week they enjoyed two assemblies given by teachers Mr Thomas and Mr Hobden, who shared their favourite books and literacy journeys. Pupils also tried their hand at a Name the Literacy Character quiz.

All the teachers chose a favourite piece of literature to read to their groups at the school for children with complex learning, emotional, social and behavioural difficulties.

Choices ranged from Dylan Thomas’ The Hunchback In the Park to Roald Dahl's George’s Marvellous Medicine.

To start the week pupils were given a balloon, each with a bookmark they had designed attached to it, which were then released.

Since then some of the balloons have been found in Bristol and one has made it as far as Swansea.

If anyone finds one of the school’s balloons then let the school know on 01249 814125.
