THOUSANDS packed into the Calne Recreation Ground on Saturday for the fifth annual CalneFest.

The main stage headliners were Dodgy, thankfully by name only, as the Britpop band wowed the massive crowds late into the evening as fireworks exploded overhead.

The Staying Out for the Summer singers concluded a huge day of music and, for the first time this year, comedy at this year’s festival which saw streams of people arriving through the gates throughout the afternoon.

The brand new comedy tent enjoyed strong attendances throughout the day with headliner Andrew O'Neill entertaining crowds with his energetic, musical and fun-filled set.

Chippenham Comedy Festival founder Wil Hodgson hosted the comedy tent from start to finish having booked all the acts himself.

He said: “I’m pleased with how this has turned out, I was impressed with how profession the set up has been.

“To see people coming to see comedy, especially people who have not seen it live before, is great. It would be good if people go to local comedy clubs off the back of this because I think it’s better to say you saw a big act in the back room of the pub than paying hundreds for a very sanitised big show.”

Zoe Newton got things underway with the first performance at 12.15pm on the second stage which saw a huge variety of musical styles including scrumpy and western performer, Corky.

Following his performance, he said: “It was a great crowd and I hope everyone had good fun. It’s lovely to see the people of Calne come out to what is a great event on their doorstep.”

In addition to the music, there were fairground stalls and face painting for the youngsters who could also tackle the obstacle course provided by Calne First Scout Group volunteers.

Organiser Glenis Ansell said: "I am delighted with how it's gone. It's been so good the amount of help we have had.

“On Friday, there were people everywhere helping, people are so supportive. I'm really pleased with it, it's lovely to see Calne come out in such great numbers. In five years we have got to this from nothing.”

Volunteers returned to the Recreation Ground on Sunday to help with litter picking and returning the park back to its original state.

Kerry Perkins, 39, from Calne said: “It’s been a lovely day, the sun has been, the beers have been flowing and the music has been really good.”
