War in the trenches during the First World War was brought home to children at a Calne school through theatre, art and song.
Culture Week at St Margaret’s Preparatory School was a culmination of a half term of studying WW1 as part of the centenary commemorations.
Children had the war brought alive by a performance of Quest for the First World War by the Freshwater Theatre Company. They were taken on a trip through the home front from fighting in the trenches to the Christmas truce, which was made poignant by the playing of Silent Night.
Later in the week the children took part in a workshop where they found out about life as a solider and learnt wartime favourite songs.
St Margaret’s parent and local artist Juliet Fooks visited the school to run Poppy art workshops. She said: ‘My aim was to focus on poppies as a basis of study using pencil, pastel, paint, print, textiles and collage. I have been delighted with the results from such talent across the year groups. They were a pleasure to teach.’’
