THE arrest of a woman for assault in Calne highlights the positive impact CCTV volunteers are making, say police.

Calne CCTV aided officers look into a fracas involving two women in Castlefield Park on Wednesday, October 22.  Later a 47-year-old woman was arrested.

The incident happened when a 50-year-old was woman out walking her dog was punched in the face following a row with another woman.

The victim sustained a deep split lip and was treated by a plastic surgeon due to her injuries.  A 47-year-old woman has been arrested.

PCSO Mark Cook, of Calne Police, said: “We’d like to pass our thanks on to the Calne CCTV team for their assistance with this inquiry. They are like having another officer on the streets, keeping an eye on the public.”

Despite the success, Calne Town Council still needs more volunteer CCTV operators who can offer a few hours a month.

Calne NPT Sergeant Ben Huggins said: “It’s a great tool for us to use. We engage with Calne CCTV on virtually a daily basis and their evidence has been used for numerous convictions in the town.

“Their support is invaluable and we have a great working relationship.”

Calne town clerk Linda Roberts was also full of praise for volunteers behind Calne’s CCTV network.

She said: “The CCTV volunteers are the back bone to the whole operation, without them we would not achieve the results we do in assisting the police with intelligence, detecting and preventing crime.

“Local people have local knowledge which is invaluable in keeping Calne a safe place to live, work and socialise.

“We owe a great debt of gratitude to the time and effort put in by our CCTV volunteers. If anyone would like to be part of our great team please do get in touch.”
