A man who smashed a glass into his victim in a drunken attack has been released on bail by a judge.

But Daniel Howlett, of Calne Road, Lyneham, was warned he could be facing a jail term after he admitted carrying out the assault.

Howlett, 27, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful wounding when he appeared at Swindon Crown Court on Friday.

He admitted smashing the glass into Mohammad Karmouni on Sunday, January 12, leaving a fragment of it in the wound.

Rob Ross, defending, said his client could not recall the incident and would have pleaded guilty before had all the evidence been handed over earlier.

He said "Had it been provided months ago, when in the hands of the police, then this defendant would have accepted that in his drunken state he had a glass in his hand: he couldn't remember that.

"Until then the only medical evidence was there was no glass in the wound. Only then the paramedic said he took some out."

Judge Peter Blair QC adjourned the case to Friday, October 31, to give the probation service time to compile a pre-sentence report.

And he released him on bail on condition he does not contact witnesses or go to Tesco's in Lyneham or its car park.

But he said: "By giving you bail now I am not giving you a final indication of what kind of sentence will be passed.

"This was obviously a serious injury to this man that may well result in a prison sentence."
