Students at John Bentley School were given a very different ‘back to school’ welcome on Wednesday as a Samba band met them at the school gates.
Assistant headteacher Will Ruscoe invited the band to help highlight changes to the school’s house system.
There was music from Devizes Samba Band and dancing by Calnevalistas, as well as mascots and flags from the school’s four halls.
Year 10 pupil Amelia Hyde plays regularly with the groups, which have already performed at carnivals in Bromham, Melksham, Calne and Devizes.
Mr Ruscoe said: “Staff came out to see it, students were smiling – it was different and that’s what we wanted. We want them to know the house system is going to be completely different this year.”
John Bentley pupils are split into four houses; Shelburne, Lansdowne, Kerry and Fitzmaurice. The houses, which are run by the students, each have their own colour scheme and mascot.
Points will be awarded for contests and conduct.
