NORTH Wilts Golf Club, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, has sent in this photograph of a 1936 exhibition match.

The match saw local pros Redman and Easterbrook team up with two of the country's best golfers, Ryder Cup player WJ Cox and British Open Champion AH Padgham.

According to a newspaper clipping from the time: "The golf was most interesting, the large crowd revelling in not only in the excellence of the golf provided, but also in the contrast of styles of the two famous players... It is quite certain that those who saw the play spent an exceedingly interesting and instructive afternoon, the ease with which Padgham and Cox – and Redman and Easterbrook for that matter – hit the ball such tremendous distances being a revelation."

Golf manager Graham Laing said: "Hundreds of people got on buses heading to the Downs to watch the game. Anyone who was there who is still alive would be quite old now, but maybe their children remember the day?"

To coincide with the anniversary celebrations a group of members is currently updating the club's history.

Mr Laing said: "We are especially interested in the period before 1926, but anything new to us would be welcome."
