It could never happen today – at least, not in the official team photograph. But there he is, Charlie Wood, the skipper of Luckington village football team, brazenly smoking.

“Like to see that now in a modern team photo,” said Malmesbury reader Gordon Williams, who sent us these postcards of local teams from bygone ages.

The Luckington AFC 1921 line-up is: back row; Kinton, Fred Wiltshire, Reg Kington, Reg Jobbings, Phil Andrews, Jeoffrey Watts. Front row; Bill Cousins, Fred Palmer, Charlie Wood, Jack O’Sheen, Stan Kington.

Of Malmesbury FC, Mr Williams said: “It was founded in 1897 as Malmesbury Town FC. They have always found it hard to find and keep pitches – partly due to the cost of hiring them from a farmer and flooding in winter. No change there then!

“I think the 1909-10 card might be taken at the present site (the Flying Monk Ground) next to the Avon beside the boxing club.

“In the 1904-05 card notice the soldier at the end of the middle row, Wiltshire Militia perhaps? The background looks much like present day Backbridge in Park Road.

“Evidently the club was renamed at Malmesbury United in season 70/71 but in 75/76 amalgamated with Swindon Victoria to become Malmesbury Victoria (and took over its fixtures, a bit like MK Dons I suppose.) “Its finest hour was winning Wiltshire League One in 73/74.”
