An 83-year-old voluntary worker has been rewarded for his dedicated 18-year service to Chippenham’s Link transport scheme for people in need.

Len Weeks of Sheldon Road was presented with the town council’s civic award by mayor Sandra Oakes at St Andrew’s Church on September 5.

Mr Weeks, who volunteers as a Link driver and co-ordinator, answers up to 150 calls a week from the public.

He said: “I was a bit shocked when I heard I had won. I had no idea; it came out of the blue.

“I like meeting people and helping people really. It is giving a service and people do appreciate it.”

Other winners of the award this year include Ruth Shaw for her work for the Central Methodist Church and Cilla Labouchere for her work with the Stroke Club.

Winners of the annual awards are identified by the town council as people who have demonstrated outstanding citizenship .
