Swindon Borough Council is asking the people of Wiltsghire to name their favourite place in the town as part of a national online search called Pride of Place.

The council has produced its own list of suggestions. which are: Lydiard Park, Barbury Castle, Coate Water, The Link Centre, Oasis, Steam Museum, Wyvern Theatre, Magic Roundabout, Town Gardens and the Swindon Designer Outlet.

"This is a great way of getting people talking and thinking about their favourite place in the borough," said council leader Rod Bluh.

"Here in Swindon we have a wealth of attractions, ranging from glorious countryside to hugely popular shopping centres."

The idea behind the poll is to get more people in touch with their councils so they know what services are on offer and how they can access them.

Coun Michael Barnes (Lab, Western) is the mayor of Swindon. He said: "My favourite place in Swindon is Plaums Pit. It's a hidden gem, an inspoiled country lake within urban Swindon."

Vince Ayris runs a trophy shop on Havelock Street in the centre of town.

He said: "Swindon Rugby Club. It is a frustrating place, and somewhere that I get involved in a lot of friendly banter, but it's great.

"Over the years I have watched a lot of young players go from the juniors to the seniors and I know they should be competing in a higher profile league."

Jeff Salter, business manager at Steam, said: "Taking home and my obvious bias for Steam out of the equation, I would say the place I most enjoy isn't one, but several.

"It is the pubs. There are several in and around the town that are just great places to be. I also really enjoy the mix of open spaces we have here."

Writer Mary Ratcliffe lives in Old Town. She said: "My favourite place happens to be my kitchen. It isn't fitted and I haven't done a lot with it. But it has a very old oak table, which is about 40 years old, and it's a great place to work. My children get very angry with me and say I should have a proper kitchen - but I love it as it is."

Swindon glamour girl Melinda Messenger lives with husband Wayne Roberts and their children - Morgan, seven, Flynn, five, and Evie, three.

"We spend most of our time in Swindon in the parks," she said, selecting Lydiard as her favourite.

Swindon Town midfielder Christian Roberts said: "The Italian restaurant, Fratello's, is my favourite place.

"There is a nice atmosphere, great staff and good food. The Players' Meal was held there shortly after the start of the season and it was fantastic."

Email the name of your favourite place, along with a description of why, to communications@swindon.gov.uk.

The poll closes on November 30.
