Two people have been airlifted to hospital following a serious, head-on, road traffic collision on the A420 near Swindon.

The accident involved a Chevrolet Kalos and a Nissan Sunny and took place at about 2.45pm near to the Acorn Bridges.

Police officers were on the scene within two minutes and the road was closed for several hours.

The driver of the Nissan, a middle-aged man from the Melksham area, sustained a serious head injury and an open fracture to his arm.

He was taken to the Great Western Hospital, in Swindon, by the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and was in surgery tonight.

The front-seat passenger in the Nissan, a 58-year-old female, suffered head and neck injuries, although they are not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 75-year-old female from the Bristol area, was also airlifted to the Great Western Hospital.

She suffered a fractured arm, neck injury and broken femur.

The Northern Roads Policing Unit at Gable Cross Police Station is requesting anyone who witnessed the accident, or saw how the two cars were being driven beforehand, to contact them on 0845 408 7000.
