LAMBING season continued at Lackham this weekend despite the return of the Beast from the East.

Hundreds of people wrapped up warm on Saturday to watch the last of the spring lambs being born at the Wiltshire College campus but unfortunately the weather proved to be too much on Sunday, forcing the college to cancel the much anticipated event.

Despite the cancellation though, students continued to do their duty and deliver the lambs throughout the day and night.

Ian Revill, assistant principal, said: "The first weekend and this Saturday were a great success with everyone in really good spirits despite some cold weather.

"The visitors did the great British thing of just getting layered up and getting out there, determined not to let the weather spoil their plans.

"The ewes obliged with a steady but frequent rate of births and the majority of visitors told me that they saw lambs being born.

"Unfortunately, on the Sunday, the amber snow warning and significant overnight snow combined with a forecast of more to follow led to the difficult decision to cancel the event.

"The long front drive was really snow bound and car parks were very slippery and all of the markings were completely obscured.

"The farm has a lot of uneven ground which when covered by snow can cause trips and falls and we also couldn’t be sure that key staff such as first aiders would be able to make it to the farm for the event, so we simply didn’t feel that it was safe enough to go ahead with the public event.

"Of course the students, who mainly live on the campus, had to continue to deliver the lambs indoors regardless.

“We have to put the safety and welfare of all involved first; we weren’t able to simply postpone as the lambing season is due to be over by the latter half of this week.

“We now look forward to welcoming visitors again to next year’s event.”
