THE Neeld Community and Arts Centre in Chippenham will welcome The Wurzels next month in the first sold-out show since the venue re-opened.

The iconic West Country band will perform on August 12 at the Neeld which was re-opened in February this year after a major revamp, including the installation of retractable tiered seating, professional sound and lighting, a new bar and air conditioning.

A programme of events is now scheduled until the end of the year including The Bohemians – a Queen tribute band – and comedians Seann Walsh and Jeremy Hardy.

Councillor Sylvia Gibson, chairman of the amenities, culture and leisure committee, said: “We’re delighted that within months of opening, we have our first sell out show at the Neeld.

“The venue has been steadily growing in popularity since it opened in February and we’re confident this will be the first of many sell out performances.

“It demonstrates how much the Neeld is adding to Chippenham’s cultural life.

“We’ve just announced our new season programme and there’s some fantastic shows coming to Chippenham.

“A real highlight will be the return of a Christmas show to the town with A Christmas Carol in December.”

Other shows scheduled for the Neeld include the James Findlay Trio, The Woodlanders, Oh Hello!, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Richard Digance and The Nutcracker.

Chippenham Mayor Terry Gibson added: “I’m very pleased with the Neeld, the council did go out on a limb and repair it and you’re always a bit wary; is it going to be a success?

“When they first started up they went to the Edinburgh Festival and spoke to a number of acts there and now we’re getting approaches from tour companies.

“The Neeld has got a good programme.”
