Elections for our representatives in the European Parliament are upon us. Polling day is today, but I already voted for our Liberal Democrat Euro MP Graham Watson by post last week.

Whether or not you join me in supporting Graham, I hope you will vote. Polls are open until 10pm, and voting in elections is the best way to make all politicians sit up and take notice. These being European elections, there is a particularly broad choice of parties, and it’s important to remember that the fewer people who vote, the more likely those with unusual and extreme views are to do well.

Britain’s membership of the EU is vital to so many jobs here in Wiltshire. New figures last week showed how well we’re recovering, with the numbers of Jobseekers and young Jobseekers in the Chippenham constituency both falling to their lowest levels since October 2008.

Leaving the EU would put that progress at risk, and that’s why I want to keep Britain in Europe.

In the House of Commons last week, I pressed the Defence Minister on the need to reform the complaints system for service personnel, especially in the Army.

The Service Complaints Commissioner has found that the Army only manages to resolve a quarter of complaints within 24 weeks, and has voiced particular concern about the way it deals with bullying, harassment and discrimination.

I urged Ministers to implement changes to address this and uphold our commitment to service personnel in the Armed Forces Covenant.

Outside the chamber, I attended the launch of the World Society for the Protection of Animals’ report on the need to end sea turtle farming in the Cayman Islands – about which a number of people have contacted me.

On Wednesday the final event of the Parliamentary calendar took place: ‘prorogation’, before which the Queen’s representatives declare her assent to legislation passed by both Houses of Parliament in recent weeks, ahead of the State Opening on June 4.

Back in Wiltshire, I tried out Springfield Leisure Centre’s new AstroTurf pitch at the launch of Corsham Hockey Club. It was great to see so many people enjoying the new facilities.

After constituency surgeries in Chippenham and Bradford on Avon this week, my next will be at The Pound Arts Centre in Corsham on Friday, June 6 from 12.30pm–2pm and Melksham Town Hall on Saturday, June 7 from 9.30am–11am.
