The House of Commons ‘prorogues’ are this week, which is Westminster-speak for the formal ending of the Parliamentary year.

It is like the state opening of Parliament in reverse, with MPs and Peers processing about and an announcement on behalf of the Queen that sets out the major bills which have been passed during the session and also describes other measures which have been taken by the government.

After this, MPs head off to their constituencies, with the House resuming sittings with the Queen’s Speech on June 4 when the programme for the next –and last – session of this Parliament will be announced.

During prorogation we work on local matters and I am particularly looking forward to my visit to the King’s Royal Hussars in Tidworth on Friday where I finally get to drive a tank (without a headscarf) and as there are important elections coming up most of us will also be out campaiging.

In Wiltshire we do not have council elections this year but there will be the all-important European election on May 22.

From talking to hundreds of constituents on this issue, including many in Ludgershall last Friday, where I helped to open the new town council offices and then on Marlborough High Street on Saturday, I think I share the views of many on Europe – a desire to remain part of the single market as it is so important for British business; a strong commitment to setting our own sovereign agenda on things like business red tape and human rights, but above all a fervent belief that the people of Britain should decide on our position, not politicians who are too scared to give voters a say.

I am 100 per cent behind the Prime Minister on this issue as he will renegotiate our relationship with Europe and then give us a guaranteed Referendum in 2017, with the choice being to stay in a reformed Europe or get out.

So next Thursday and again on May 7, 2015, we will all have a clear choice at the polls: vote Conservative to support the one political party committed to giving us an In/Out Referendum, or waste a vote on another party who can’t or won’t offer us that choice.

As well as campaigning, I will be carrying on my normal local agenda of meetings and if I can help you with anything or you would like an appointment at my next advice surgery phone (01380) 729358 or writing to me c/o the House of Commons.
