Police believe they know identity of burned body found in Chippenham

Detective Inspector Matt Davey said in a statement: “As you are aware yesterday morning at approximately 3am the police and fire brigade were deployed to the scene of a fire in the Sainsbury’s car park on Bath Road, Chippenham.

“After the fire was extinguished a body was found and we can now confirm that this was the body of a white woman, who at the time of her death was aged at least 40. We think we know who the woman is and are currently in the process of tracing her next of kin.

“We are following a number of lines of inquiry and are keeping an open mind as to the circumstances leading to this woman’s death.

“We would like to thank the public for their assistance so far and to all of those who have come forward with information. We have already received information from a couple who walked through Sainsbury’s car park at approximately 02:11am and the driver of a car that drove through the car park at 02:27am.

“We are still appealing for anyone who was in the area or crossing through the Sainsbury’s car park between the hours of 01:30 and 03:00am on the morning of Tuesday 7th August 2012 to come forward and assist us with our inquiries.

“Today we are releasing two CCTV images. The first is an image of a man who walked through the car park with a pedal cycle at 01:54 am. We would appeal to that man or persons that may be able to assist with his identity to get in touch with us.

“The second image is that of a car. We are appealing to the driver or occupants of a small dark coloured hatchback car seen driving through the car park in the direction of McDonalds at 02:48am that morning.

“We believe that this man and the occupants of that vehicle may have relevant information that would assist our inquiries.”
