On a rainy Bank Holiday Monday, Bradford and Avon welcomed some family fun to dispel the gloom while raising money for charity.

“We’ve raised around £1,500,” said Judith Hersee, president of the town’s Lions Club, who organised the fun day.

But, despite the inclement weather, people’s spirits didn’t appear too dampened as locals of all ages turned out in raincoats and umbrellas to enjoy the event. The day, which comprises a car boot sale in Victory Fields and fun activities for families in Culver Close, has been running for more than 30 years.

“It started out as the raft race,” said Mrs Hersee, whose husband, Brian, co-ordinated this year’s fun day.

“But with the construction of Greenland Mills there was no longer access to the river. Once we could no longer run the raft race we decided to turn it into a family fun day.”

On the day there was a raffle, tombola, and skittles, as well as fairground rides and a bouncy castle for little ones.

A tea tent provided shelter for those who wanted to dry off over a nice cuppa and live music was provided by Antigua Joe.

Around 170 vintage vehicles also turned up offering keen motorists the chance to showcase their pride and joy.

The Lions Club is organising further fundraisers including a Blind Awareness Day on July 16 and an art exhibition on August 14.
