New speed bumps and a zebra crossing in Webbington Road in Chippenham have been welcomed after six years of campaigning.

Town councillors Bill Douglas and Mark Packard have been fighting for the road improvements, to make the road safer for children from Charter School who walk home along the road.

The speed bumps are already in place and the zebra crossing will be completed by early next week.

Mr Douglas also heralded the changes to the road as cost-effective as they came in less than originally expected at £38,000 rather than the estimated £67,000.

He said: “The difference we can see with drivers coming down the road is already huge. If you are travelling at a slow enough speed, you can go over the bumps with minimal disturbance to the car.”

Judy Edwards, extended services co-ordinator of the Chippenham children’s parliament, and King’s Lodge School headteacher Lyn Evans wrote to Wiltshire Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport Dick Tonge to ask for the changes.

Mrs Edwards said: “We are really delighted to see the new improved layout.

“It’s really good news. The children’s parliament had done some work about the road and spoken to councillors themselves about their concerns, so they will be really pleased.”

Mr Packard said: “I think this will really reduce the amount of traffic coming down the road.

“The main issue here has always been child safety. This will make people think twice about using the road as quick route through.”
