A driver and his two women passengers, all of them elderly, had to be cut from a Citroen Berlingo after it crashed on the A345 Marlborough to Pewsey road at 9am on Tuesday.

The car apparently clipped the nearside curve on the bends at Clench Common before it careered across the road into a hedge.

All three were trapped in the car and because of their age the emergency services agreed to cut the vehicle apart to free them. They were tended by paramedics as firefighters removed the doors before cutting off the roof of the three year old car.

Police at the scene said the car had passed a stationary mail van, which was parked on the offside of the road, and it was heading into bright sunlight when the driver lost control.

Dr Jonathan Glover from SWIFT Medics said it was fortunate the car had a comparatively soft landing in the hedge.

Dr Glover, one of the Marlborough Medical Practice GPs, said another doctor who had been passing stopped to give initial assistance before paramedics arrived.

The Wiltshire Air Ambulance was summoned but after its paramedic was assured that the injuries were relatively minor it took off again.

The back seat passenger was the first to be freed and taken to hospital followed by the front seat passenger and then the driver. Dr Glover said: “None of them have significant injuries fortunately.”

The road remained closed for about three hours.
