Peggy Griffin, nee Hibbert, who has died aged 75, met her husband Harvey when they were both pupils at Chippenham Secondary Modern School in Station Hill. They began courting when Mr Griffin was 17, and Mrs Griffin, 16, and were married three years later at the Methodist church in Corsham.

The couple, who were married for 57 years, lived initially above a greengrocer’s shop belonging to Mrs Griffin’s parents in Sheldon Road, Chippenham.

Mr Griffin worked for Westinghouse and his wife helped her parents run the shop and later worked at Sainsbury’s.

The couple had a son Keith and daughter Linda and grandchildren Joe, Nicki and Thomas, who are all in their 20s..

Mrs Griffin played for Chippenham Golf Club for 50 years and was twice ladies captain. She also enjoyed outdoor bowls.

She suffered from breast cancer around seven years ago, but made a full recovery. Mr Griffin said: “Peggy is the love of my life, and she was one of the biggest parts of my life. She always enjoyed herself and will be remembered for that.”

Mrs Griffin died on March 18 in the Royal United Hospital, Bath, following a short illness.

Her funeral will take place next Wednesday at 11.15am at Monkton Hill Methodist Church in Chippenham. Family flowers only, and donations in lieu to Dorothy House c/o FW Jones and Son, 30 Market Place, SN15 3HP.
