Calne Town Council has backed the concerns of shop owners in Church Street over the chaos caused by lorries getting trapped while looking for delivery entrances to the Co-op and Sainsbury’s.

According to shop owners, HGVs are getting stuck in Church Street on a daily basis, before trying to either turn around in the cramped space or reverse out.

Alison Taylor, owner of Simply Flowers, spoke on behalf of all the shop owners in Church Street.

She said: “It is a miracle that we have not had a serious accident to contend with.

“It is not that the lorries are deliberately going down there, they just get confused because the signage is so poor.

“There are very small signs and some cobbled areas but they are difficult enough to spot in the light of day, let alone when it gets dark.

“It is a dangerous situation for other vehicles and for pedestrians and someone is going to be seriously hurt if nothing is done.”

The matter was discussed at at town development and planning meeting on Tuesday and the town council will now ask the Highways Department to look into the situation. The matter will also be raised at the next Calne Area Board meeting.

Coun Alan Hill said: “I sympathise with the shop owners and I think it would be a good idea for the Highways Department to come and take a look at what is happening.

“But there needs to either be some better signage or the existing signage needs to be made bigger or be repositioned.”
