Wiltshire Police Authority has agreed to donate £4,000 towards a national monument to honour police officers killed in the line of duty.

The memorial will be built at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire and all police forces have been approached for contributions.

The request caused controversy in Wiltshire Police Authority last Thursday.

Gifty Tawiah said the names of officers who have died in the line of duty are engraved on stained glass windows at police headquarters in Devizes.

She said: “I find that (memorial) more meaningful, being local in Wiltshire.”

But Paul Sample said: “The £4,000 being suggested as a contribution is less than we spend on stationery. Those who lay down their lives in the fight against crime to keep us safe deserve to be recognised by the nation.”
