People suffering memory loss will soon be able to join a Singing for the Brain group in Devizes.
Alzheimer’s Support, which runs the Sidmouth Club in the town, has teamed up with the national Alzheimer’s Society and Wiltshire Council to launch a branch of the nationally- acclaimed groups.
Alzheimer’s Support’s development manager, Stephany Bardzil, said: “People with memory loss often recall melodies and words of songs long after other memories have faded, so we build on that amazing ability to communicate through music.
“A Singing for the Brain group offers a real workout for the brain, as well as being a really enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.
“The sessions are led by a trained facilitator and the material is carefully chosen to include familiar and less familiar songs and rhymes, with plenty of call and response, singing in rounds and harmonies “We already run groups in Marlborough and Bradford on Avon and people tell us it is the highlight of their week.”
The new group will meet at Rowde village hall on Wednesday afternoons from next month.
Volunteers are still needed to sit with the singers and to serve refreshments.
If you are interested in coming along as a participant or as a volunteer please contact Stephany on (01225) 776481.
