Roger Hiles, 64, whose enthusiasm for Scouting began when he became a Cub at the age of eight, will be missed greatly by the movement in which he gave outstanding service. Mr Hiles died within three weeks of cancer being diagnosed and, at his funeral at St Bartholomew’s Church in Wootton Bassett, Canon Thomas Woodhouse commented on the shock felt by everyone.

The large congregation included many Scouters in uniform.

He and his wife June married in 1967 and the family’s tribute of yellow roses was a reminder of her wedding bouquet.

The couple had a son Stephen, daughter Alison and four grandchildren.

Mr Hiles was born in Haydon Wick, Swindon, in August 1946.

He became assistant leader of Apache Cub Scouts at Wootton Bassett while in his late twenties and was later appointed leader of Pathfinder Cubs and subsequently served as District Commissioner.

He was a training advisor with Swindon North District, ran courses for leaders and latterly worked with the county as a Cub advisor.

He gained great satisfaction from the way in which challenges and Cub camps helped youngsters to grow in confidence.

He was awarded the Medal of Merit in 1994 and the Silver Acorn in 2004.

Many people cherish their memories of Roger Hiles as a good, kind, caring person who had a dry sense of humour.

He enjoyed football and supported Liverpool and Swindon Town. He also enjoyed Blunsdon Speedway.

The service in church was followed by burial, attended by his closest family, at Wootton Bassett Cemetery.

Everyone was invited to the wake at Marsh Farm Hotel. Memorial cheques, for Prospect Hospice or The Friends of New Court Surgery, may be sent to Maslin Funeral Service, 118a High Street, Wootton Bassett SN4 7AU.
