The police helicopter and dog teams were used to hunt raiders who struck at the Betfred bookmakers in Chippenham last night.

A man wearing a balaclava walked into the bookies at 7.30pm and demanded cash. Money was handed over and he ran out of the premises in the Market Place and escaped in a car driven by another man.

A worker at the bookmakers raised the alarm and police units arrived quickly on the scene. At 7.50pm a silver Peugeot 307 car was found in Wood Lane, Chippenham, close to the town's police station.

A 37-year-old man from Bristol was also arrested on suspicion of robbery.

Police are still hunting a second man.

A police spokesman said: "One of the staff raised the alarm and the helicopter and dog teams were sent immediately. We are not sure at this stage if the man who went into the bookmakers was armed."
