Karma nightclub’s licence is under review again, after police expressed concerns that lessons have not been learned from their review in August.

The previous review requested by Wiltshire Police was on the grounds that Karma, Chippenham’s only nightclub, was responsible for a significant proportion of crime and disorder in the town.

The police do not believe those issues have been addressed in the past six months and a public notice has been issued, informing residents of the latest review.

Wiltshire Council’s licensing team has now opened a consultation period and is accepting representations until February 24.

The future of the licence will then be decided by the licensing committee.

The public notice said: “The police continue to have concerns in respect of the management of this premises. Poor practice had and continues to have a negative impact on the licensing objectives.

“Police still find that unacceptable levels of crime and disorder are associated with the venue.”

News of the review comes the same week that five people were arrested outside the club for a variety of offences, one of which forced the police to use pepper spray.

In the early hours of Saturday a 23-year-old man was arrested for assault after a fellow party-goer was left with a bleeding eye socket.

In the early hours of Sunday four men in their 20s were arrested, two for affray and two for being drunk and disorderly. Pepper spray was used on one of the men.

Karma owner Mike Rosser said: “It is pretty ridiculous. I think everybody can see it is a bit of a joke. The trouble last weekend was about the first we have had since August.

“I can absolutely guarantee that things have changed since the last review. We have done everything they wanted us to do and more. We have gone to plastic bottles and glasses. And we have ten doorman every weekend when we legally only have to have six or seven.”
