Age UK has urged more teams than ever to enter this year’s pancake races in Devizes to be held on Shrove Tuesday, March 8.

Even if you can’t raise a team yourself, the organisers are hoping that townspeople will turn up to cheer the entrants.

Emily Cole, Age UK Wiltshire’s race organiser, said: “The races are such a fun way to celebrate Pancake Day with colleagues, friends and family.

“Each year the event has grown in popularity and we are proud that the races are now an established part of Devizes’ events calendar.

“Almost anyone can take part. All you need is a sense of fun and a pair of sensible shoes.”

The races are run between 12.30 and 1.30pm along the stretch of the Market Place between The Shambles and Devizes Visitor Centre, which is roped off for the event.

The adult races are organised as relays, with teams of four. The organisers are also hoping to run individual mother-and-toddler and mobility scooter races.

And, of course, there are a series of races for children. St Joseph’s Primary School says it will be entering several teams.

A Challenge Salver will be presented to the winning adult team.

Miss Cole said: “Fancy dress is optional but prizes will be awarded for the best fancy dress as well as the team that raises the most sponsorship.”

Staff from Age UK Wiltshire borrowed fancy dress from local shop Face Envy for our photocall last week outside the Black Swan Hotel in the Market Place, which is providing the pancakes for the race.

Landlady Yvonne Wright said: “This is a great event for the town and I hope as many local companies as possible will join in.”

Already last year’s winner, Mikey’s Barbershop, has signed up to defend its title and entries are expected from Goughs Solicitors, the Gazette & Herald (twice previous winners) and, of course, Age UK Wiltshire.

Devizes Rotary Club will provide the marshals on the day and prizes will be presented by Devizes Mayor Pete Smith.

Entry forms and further details are available from Devizes Visitor Centre, Age UK Wiltshire, on the website www.ageukwiltshire.org.uk or by phoning (01380) 727767.
