Jacquie Crews, 62, was an inspirational maths teacher with a passion for her subject who taught at Wootton Bassett School for ten years.

She died in Portugal, where she was a staff member at the International school in Lisbon until two years ago. She had continued to live in Portugal, where she gave private tuition, but had visited friends in Wootton Bassett shortly before her death.

Since being diagnosed with cancer five years ago, Mrs Crews maintained a positive lifestyle and remained closely involved in the Maths Olympics which took her all over Europe.

The family moved from Germany to Blunsdon over 25 years ago, later moving to Homefield, Wootton Bassett.

Her passion for maths sparked the enthusiasm of students in the regional competitions she organised in this country and overseas.

She was on the board of the UK Mathematics Trust and Further Mathematics Network and worked on brain training.

She was mentor for student maths teachers at the University of Bath and, in association with the university, led many workshops for the gifted and talented.

While Katie, her eldest child, was at university, Mrs Crews and the three younger members of the family spent a year in Australia in a teacher exchange.

Mrs Crews used to be a member of the Liddington Hall Morris Dancers, six of whom gave a vibrant display at her memorial service at St Bartholomew’s Church, Wootton Bassett.

The Rev Canon Dr Vincent Strudwick, who had been a close friend since student days, paid tribute, as did younger daughter Pippa, son Sam and former husband Roger. An extensive display of photographs illustrated Mrs Crews’ eventful life.

After the service, friends and family walked around Avebury, one of Mrs Crew’ favourite places.
