Westlea Homes has won planning permission on appeal for 29 new homes at the bungalow estate at Curzon Park, Calne.

The application for 29 houses and flats on land near Long Barrow Road, had previously been turned down by Wiltshire Council.

The proposals were initially rejected on the basis that the proposed two-storey buildings would obscure the surrounding bungalows and were out of character with the area.

But an inspector on Tuesday found in favour of the developers, saying that there was an overriding need for affordable homes in Calne, which the development would help provide.

The homes had their own distinct appearance which suited the location.

Jo Curson, head of development at GreenSquare, which owns Westlea Housing, said that building work will start later this year, creating an estimated ten jobs.

She said: “We are now able to develop a high-quality scheme with a mix of house types, including a high proportion of bungalows next to the existing estate.

“We completed extensive consultation with local home owners during the planning process and made a number of changes to the layout and design following resident feedback, which has benefited the design.”

Calne Town Council had opposed the plans and is very disappointed at the outcome.

Coun Emma Holton said: “I really feel for the residents in Curzon Park because they have fought so hard to stop this.

“When their bungalows were built it was supposed to be like a little retirement community but now they have this hanging over them.It is very disappointing.”
