Wootton Bassett Mayor Mary Champion met Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday and he hinted a special parade through Wootton Bassett will be held to commemorate the end of the repatriations when RAF Lyneham closes later this year.

She visited Downing Street at Mr Cameron’s request so he could thank the town for the respect shown to fallen military personnel, who are repatriated on an almost weekly basis.

Coun Champion, who was accompanied by deputy mayor Paul Heaphy and town clerk Johnathan Bourne, said: “It was so relaxed and so nice.

He made me feel so welcome He said thank you so much to the town and asked what we thought about the idea of a parade through the town.

“We told him about the one in 2009 and how wonderful it was. Back then we had bands from all the services and it was something really special for everyone in Wootton Bassett.”
