Mollie Hobbs (nee Wild),whose husband Henry was clerk to Wootton Bassett Parish Council, has died aged 97.

She was born at Tockenham in October 1913 and met her husband through hockey, both of them being keen players.

They married at Lyneham in 1936 and raised their daughter Jennifer and son Jeremy at Dudley House, next to Wootton Bassett Town Hall.

They were both involved with the Scouts and in sport, including tennis.

Mrs Hobbs, a member of Wootton Bassett and later of Hook WIs, was an accomplished cook and skilled needlewoman who made clothes for the family and also created beautiful embroidery and knitwear.

She was a volunteer at the baby clinic in Wootton Bassett and did many jobs for St Bartholomew’s and All Saints’ Church. Later she volunteered at the Oxfam shop.

She was known for her hospitality and, at one New Year’s Eve party, she decided to take her guests outside to sing around the town’s Christmas tree. However, as the church clock struck midnight, all the lights went out.

The couple moved to Ballards Ash but Mrs Hobbs came back into town, to Longleaze, and then to Athelstan nursing home in Malmesbury.

Her funeral took place at Kingsdown Crematorium on Thursday. She has five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Donations for the RNIB (Wiltshire Branch) may be sent to Hillier Funeral Service, 170 Victoria Road, Swindon SN1 3DF.
