Wootton Bassett club will touch down with more than £5,000 for Help For Heroes at a presentation ceremony on Saturday.

Steve Milner, player manager of the first, second and third senior sides, said: “We have servicemen playing for us and one of our lads can’t play because he’s heading out to Afghanistan this weekend. We constantly have lads out there.

“I think it is fantastic that we have raised £5,000. It’s a great achievement for a small club.”

The money was raised at an auction of sports memorabilia.

Lots that went under the hammer included weekend hire of a Jaguar X2, a helicopter ride, an RAF rugby training jacket, a tour of Wadworth brewery in Devizes, designer watches and signed premier league football and rugby shirts.

Mr Milner said: “I just want to thank everyone who donated to the auction. Without them we couldn’t have done it.

“It was because the donations were so spectacular that we were able to raise so much money.”

Other items in the auction included an IBM Thinkpad and a Samsung Netbook donated by Motorola, spa tickets for the Four Pillars Hotel in the Cotswolds, a round of golf in Marlborough, cordless drills and a New Zealand rugby shirt signed by the All Blacks.

H4H’s Wiltshire co-ordinator Bernice Brady, who is also a civilian driver working at RAF Lyneham, has been invited to the ceremony to pick up the cheque.

She said: “Raising money for charity is not easy and I think it’s amazing what they achieved.

“It will be me and 70 rugby players on Saturday, which is a bit scary, but I’m looking forward to going along.”
