Greatwood racehorse rescue and rehabilitation centre is asking people to hold Sunday lunch parties to help it make up for income lost as the recession bites.

The downturn has had such an impact on the charity, which is based at Clench Common, near Marlborough, that it is now unable to take in any new horses.

Greatwood costs about £500,000 a year to run and has seen its income dwindle over the last year as its supporters and sponsors have had to tighten their belts.

Helen Yeadon, who runs it with her husband Michael, said activities were having to be curtailed because of a drop in funding.

Mrs Yeadon said: “We will not be taking in any more horses until we are able to attract more funds.”

One money-raising idea the charity has come up with is to encourage people to organise Sunday lunches on the same day, November 7, and invite guests to make a contribution to the horse rescue centre.

The initiative is being supported by former champion jockey Willie Carson and TV sports presenter Clare Balding, who have each contributed their favourite recipes to inspire people to join the Great Sunday Lunch.
