A Chippenham golf course was ‘sabotaged’ at the weekend in an act of revenge – but also for a good cause, the Gazette’s Help for Heroes appeal.

More than 130 members of Chippenham Golf Club were joined by guests from Buckley Barracks in Hullavington to take part in a round of the craziest golf, which raised more than £1,000 for the recovery centre in Tidworth.

Course manager Chris Sealey, fresh from the Open Championship at St Andrews, was given carte blanche to create ‘Sealey’s Revenge’ and prepared an 18-hole assault course for the players on Sunday.

They were confronted by enormous logs on the greens, holes that were cut off the greens, and water features in the bunkers, complete with yellow plastic ducks.

Machinery was parked in front of one hole, supervised by an Indian mannequin in high-viz jacket, helmet and ear defenders. She suffered several hits during the round and her modelling career is probably over.

Club secretary Pat Dawson hailed the event as a huge success.

She said: “Everyone who took part in the event had a great day and we were absolutely delighted to have raised over a £1,000 for Help for Heroes.”

Kingsdown Golf Club, Box, raised £4,000 on its for Help for Heroes golf day.

The club, which was taking part in the National Golf Club challenge, was well supported by members, with a raffle alone raising £1,000.

Tee sponsorship, an auction, chipping competition a bags and books stall and a Help for Heroes merchandise stall all helped amass the total.

Wingfield’s Nick Quintin topped the men’s leaderboard with 42 points on countback from Mark Stanley. Denise Greatorex took the ladies’ honours on countback from Ros Thomson, both with 39.
